The first edition of the Himalayan Rally held in 1980 was based on the Safari Rally format.

Speaking about Memorial Drive, FMSCI CEO Rajan Syal said, “Once we saw that things were slowly opening up, some of us in the motorsport community decided that we needed to bring back the good times. One should drive for. The idea snowballed into doing something in memory of Nazir Hussain.”

Memorial Drive will see the 100 car field moving from Greater Noida to Lansdowne on November 8. After this the convoy will leave for Mussoorie on 9th November and Kufri on 10th. The drivers will then proceed to the iconic route of the original Himalayan rally – Jalori Pass before stopping at Manali. On the last day the participants will be seen crossing the Rohtang Pass before the conclusion of the memorial drive in Manali.

Sayal said, “The idea was to recreate the original route for various reasons. In 40 years, a lot of scenarios have changed, and it will be interesting for former contestants as well as fans to experience it.”
