Late Nazir Hussain Created Himalayan Rally and Memorial Campaign Shows Original Route

Paying tribute to one of the most influential names of Indian motorsport, the Nazir Hussain Memorial Drive began in Delhi today. The 100 car zone started from Greater Noida and will follow its footsteps through the original route of the Himalayan rally. Nazir Hussain was a racing driver and motorsport administrator who put India firmly on the map when it comes to international motorsports. He was the founder of the prestigious Himalayan Rally.

The Nazir Hussain Memorial Drive pays tribute to the legend and features the Himalayan rally community which includes former participants, volunteers and officials. Memorial Drive starts from Greater Noida while proceeding towards Lansdowne. After this the convoy will leave for Mussoorie on 9th November and Kufri on 10th. The drivers will then proceed to the iconic route of the original Himalayan rally – Jalori Pass before stopping at Manali. On the last day the participants will be seen crossing the Rohtang Pass before the conclusion of the memorial drive in Manali.

Hossein was a founding member of the Indian Automotive Racing Club (IARC) in 1984/85 and a former president of the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of India (FMSCI). He was the FIA’s Vice President for Sport, Chief Manager of the World Rally Championship and a member of the World Motor Sport Council. Apart from starting the Himalayan Rally, Hussain also organized the Great Desert-Himalaya Rally in 1988.

The original Himalayan rally took place in 1980 and was based on a safari rally format. The rally covered a 4,000 km long route through some of the most treacherous terrain at an altitude of 10,000 feet. The first edition of Himalayan Rally saw around 90 entries out of which around 30 were foreign entries. The Himalayan Rally has since become one of the most challenging and rewarding motorsport events in India.

Nazir Hussain passed away in 2019 at the age of 78 after a long battle with the disease.
