The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is set to get ‘deemed-to-be-university’ status, according to a top official, approved by the executive committee of the council on Monday.

“NCERT will get deemed-to-be-university status in the de novo category. The proposal has been approved,” the official confirmed.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan presided over the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council.

De novo Deemed University is an institution that can apply to the UGC for setting up a new institution as a Deemed University which will study and research in unique and emerging areas of knowledge which is not offered by an existing institution .

As the apex organization for school education, NCERT conducts various activities and programmes, which include educational research and innovation, curriculum development, development of curricula and teaching-learning materials.

The degree awarding bodies for undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by regional educational institutions of NCERT are affiliated to various state universities and a central university (NEHU).

Currently, the undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by the Regional Institute of Education (REI) of NCERT are affiliated to local universities like Barkatullah University, Bhopal, MDS University, Ajmer, Mysore University, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and North-Eastern Hill University. NCERT was established in 1961 by the Government of India under the Societies Act to assist and advise the government in the matter of school education.

The Council is striving to attain Institute of National Importance (INI) status.

In 2010, a committee constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development under the leadership of Professor Govardhan Mehta recommended that N c E r T INI status should be given in recognition of its contribution in the field of education and it is also engaged in significant field of work.

However, the council has not got INI status.
