“There are various reasons for suicide like professional/career problems, alienation, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, alcohol addiction, financial loss, chronic pain,” the NCRB said.
The bureau said Maharashtra has the highest (19,909), Tamil Nadu 16,883, Madhya Pradesh 14,578, West Bengal 13,103 and Kerala 12,259.
“These five states together accounted for 50.1% of the total suicides reported in the country. Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state (which has 16.9% of the country’s population) has recorded a comparatively low percentage of suicide deaths, accounting for only 3.1% of the total suicides in the country.”
