NEET 2021: Tamil actor Suriya says marks alone don’t make life, remembers his student days

Explaining to the students that there is still a lot to be achieved ahead of such entrance exams, Surya urged the students to be confident and courageous in life. The actor requested the students to talk about their feelings to someone they love and trust and stressed that the pain and hardship would go away soon. “This pain and fear will disappear in no time. Ending life is a lifetime punishment that you give to your parents and those who love you,” Surya said in the video.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had recently vowed to continue the state’s legal battle to scrap the entrance exam.. The state assembly on September 13 passed a bill to do away with NEET and make way for medical admissions based on Class 12 marks. However, the bill is yet to get President Ram Nath Kovind’s assent, after which it may go into effect.

Before the advent of NEET in 2013, admission to medical courses in Tamil Nadu was conducted in two ways – on the basis of marks obtained in Class 12 and institute-specific entrance examinations.

Tamil Nadu was one of the states that opposed the implementation of NEET, which replaced the All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) for all central and state colleges. Several petitions seeking exemption from NEET for Tamil Nadu were filed in the Supreme Court, but all were turned down in 2017.
