NEET face-off: DMK to boycott Tamil Nadu governor’s ‘at home reception’

DMK will not attend the ‘At Home Reception’ organized by Governor RN Ravi.

Chennai:

State Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu said that the NEET face-off between the ruling DMK and the Raj Bhavan in Tamil Nadu will not attend the ‘At Home Reception’ organized by Governor RN Ravi on Thursday.

Mr. Thennarasu and Health Minister Ma Subramaniam met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan over the status of the Second Assembly Bill, which sought to exempt Tamil Nadu from the purview of the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET). After the Governor returned the earlier Bill, the House accepted the second Bill saying it was against the interest of rural students.

Mr Thennarasu told reporters that the governor had to give his assent to the bill, but he informed them that it was still under his consideration.

“The assembly works according to the democratic ethos. And the second time a unanimous resolution was adopted and it is still stuck in the Raj Bhavan. So in this situation, it would not be appropriate for us to attend the feast,” he said. . At Home Reception was organized today on the occasion of Tamil New Year’s Day.

“We have conveyed our decision,” he said.

Governor and Chief Minister MK Stalin was also scheduled to attend the unveiling of the statue of the national poet, Mahakavi Subramaniam Bharathiar on the occasion.

Mr. Thennarasu pointed out that Mr. Stalin’s demand for NEET exemption was also raised with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, but to no avail.

Responding to a question about future course of action, including meeting the President on the issue, the minister said Mr Stalin would discuss it and take a decision.

DMK’s ally CPI(M) has already announced a boycott of the program over the issue.
