Located in East Delhi, RGSSH, which comes under the Delhi government, is one of the major facilities for the treatment of COVID-19 in the city. “Senior residents and junior residents have boycotted the services from today. But we are trying to compensate with consultants so that patient care is not affected much,” said a senior hospital official, adding that around 900-2000 patients visit its OPD daily. The RDA members also protested and boycotted the services at Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya and one of the busiest centers in Delhi, Northern Railway Central Hospital.

Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar confirmed that doctors from NR Central Hospital have joined the protest. The agitation of resident doctors of Delhi protesting the delay in NEET-PG 2021 counseling entered the 13th day on Wednesday. Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) president Dr Manish said, “The strike is still on”.

The strike has also affected the care of patients at three Centre-run Safdarjung, RML and Lady Hardinge hospitals and some hospitals run by the Delhi government. On Tuesday, FORDA had decided to continue the agitation as no progress was made in a meeting between their federation’s delegation and the Union Health Minister.

A meeting was held between a delegation of FORDA and Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya at Nirman Bhawan here, but the doctors’ body had said “the response was not satisfactory”. Mandaviya had urged him to withdraw his strike in the larger public interest.

Resident doctors in Delhi gathered on the premises of Safdarjung Hospital on Wednesday morning, where police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order. According to the police, adequate police arrangements have been made at Safdarjung Hospital, where more than a thousand resident doctors have gathered for their demands.

A senior police officer said that the protesting residents have been made aware of the Yellow Alert issued on Tuesday in the national capital in view of the prevailing coronavirus pandemic situation. Amid a spike in COVID-19 cases following the emergence of the Omicron version, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday declared a yellow alert, under which schools, colleges, cinemas and gyms have been closed, non-stop. Shops of essential commodities are running. Metro trains and buses are running on an odd-even basis, and with 50 percent seating capacity in the city.

The police officer said, “We urged them (protesting doctors) to follow the COVID protocol, maintain social distancing. We have told them that such gatherings are not allowed as per the new DDMA guidelines, and we urged them to call off their protest. “The whole country looks up to doctors and if the doctors themselves gather in large numbers, there is a high risk of spreading COVID-19 and who will treat the patients. We are taking all measures to create awareness and persuade the protesting doctors to call off their protests, amid rising COVID cases and Omicron fears,” he said.

When protesters questioned the police about rallies reportedly elsewhere amid the Yellow Alert, they replied that, “the law is the same for all”, and no such activity would be allowed as per the DDMA guidelines Which is being “strictly followed”.
