Nehru Jayanti: Opposition slams government for absence of Rajya Sabha Speaker, Lok Sabha Speaker from Parliament program

The opposition on Sunday hit out at the government over the absence of the Rajya Sabha chairman, the Lok Sabha speaker and ministers whose portraits adorn the Central Hall of Parliament.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and other party leaders. attended the program On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

“Extraordinary scenes in Parliament today in traditional celebrations on the birth anniversary of those whose portraits adorn the central hall. Speaker of the Lok Sabha absent. Speaker of Rajya Sabha absent. Not a single minister is present. Can there be more atrocities than this?” Congress Chief Whip in Rajya Sabha Jairam Ramesh, who attended the program, said on Twitter.

Tagging Ramesh’s tweet, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien also targeted the government.

Mr. O’Brien said in a tweet, “No wonder I am now. This government is destroying India’s great institutions, including #Parliament, all at once.”

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to pay tribute to Nehru on his birth anniversary.

Born in 1889, the Congress veteran remained the longest-serving prime minister of India.
