The SPSR Nellore district administration has reached a milestone in the creation of work for the poor persons in the villages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA).

The district had achieved the target of the month set by the state government only till February 14 and stood first in the state in this matter.

Besides this, the district continued to show employment to one lakh more people for the rest of the month as well. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had directed the district collectors to show work to one lakh people every day during the entire month of February under the poverty alleviation programme.

Developed infrastructure in rural areas

Overseeing the implementation in the district, Collector KVN Chakradhar Babu said that better utilization of MGNREGA funds for providing employment to district workers and creating infrastructure with related material component in rural areas and enhancing livelihood security in rural areas able to do. He said that this is the best performance of the district in the last 14 years.

District Water Management Agency project director Tirupatia said the scheme helped thousands of workers earn their livelihood during the difficult times of the pandemic.

The scheme facilitated drought-proofing and flood management and in the process achieved empowerment of the socially disadvantaged, especially women, SC, ST. The department was able to create assets like building, house, Anganwadi, Village Secretariat and Rythu Bharosa Kendra by using 40% material component.

‘7.55 lakh employees benefitted’

“The district is on course to cross the target of 1.17 crore person days by achieving 1.50 crore person days during this financial year,” the official expressed confidence. During this period (2021-2022) wages of ₹252 crore were paid to 7.55 lakh workers from 4.34 lakh families. The official said that 18,255 families have been given 100 days of employment.

Udayagiri, the most drought-prone region now ranked first in employment generation in the district, followed by Venkatagiri, Sullurpet and Gudur assembly constituencies.
