Neom: All you need to know about Saudi’s futuristic city without roads and cars

Nearly 20% of infrastructure work in NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s $500 billion futuristic cities, has been completed, the agency reports. Saudi’s mega engineering project will be powered by clean energy, without cars and on roads with no roads or zero carbon emissions. NEOM is a combination of both the Greek word NEO (new) and M, the Arabic word mustaqbal (future) and the first letter of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Here’s all you need to know about NEOM- a mega architectural project in Saudi Arabia:

  • This futuristic city is the brainchild of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also known as MBS.
  • The megacity project would be spread over 26,500 square kilometers on the Red Sea coast (an area larger than Kuwait or Israel).
  • Neom will be divided into 10 different areas, including a floating port, a ski resort in the Sarvat Mountains, and a mirror city.
  • In Neom, the luxury island destination Sindla will be launched for tourism, Trojena will be a mountain destination, The Line will be the flagship city, and Oxagon will be a gateway for clean industries.
  • About 450,000 people are expected to live in NEOM by 2026, with that number expected to increase to 1.5 to 2 million by 2030. Eventually, the LINE will have nine million residents and will be built with a footprint of just 34 square km. The line will be 100 meters long and 200 meters wide and 170 km long.
  • In the city of Neom, the communities of the line will be arranged in three dimensions. Residents will have access to all their daily needs within 5 minutes of walking distance. Services will be autonomous by leveraging AI. There will be a glass pane in the line.
  • Neom will have the world’s largest green hydrogen production plant.
  • 100% of all energy in NEOM will come from Renewable energy sources – the sun and wind – and there will also be hydrogen-based power generation – all ensuring a zero-emissions, carbon-positive ecosystem.
  • One of NEOM’s most ambitious plans – in a country that currently imports around 80 percent of its food – is to become “the world’s most food-sufficient city” using innovative vertical farming and greenhouses.
  • A Saudi Arabian city will come out with a next-generation form of transport called the Volocopter.
  • Saudi Arabia will offer direct flights from NEOM to London and Dubai.
  • Trojena has been awarded the Asian Winter Games in 2029. Trojena will be located about 50 kilometers from the Gulf of Aqaba coast, in the Sarwat Mountains, with an altitude of 1,500–2,600 meters. Although it is in the desert, the site’s climate is much cooler than the rest of Neom.
