After registering a historic win in the Thomas Cup on Sunday, winners Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Chirag Shetty and others thanked PM Narendra Modi for ‘inspiring and encouraging them to do better’.
Badminton player Chirag said, “I have never seen a prime minister calling a sports team after a win. This happens only in India. We were very happy that he took time out of his busy schedule and congratulated us on our victory.” Shetty on the victory of Thomas Cup 2022.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had an exclusive phone conversation with the Indian badminton team, which created history by winning its maiden Thomas Cup trophy in Thailand.
On the call, the Prime Minister remarked that the team had worked wonders and invited them to his residence upon their arrival in India to share their experiences.
He asked the players about their state of mind during the event, to which the players replied that the QF win against Malaysia gave them the belief that they can beat anyone.
Prime Minister Modi lauded the players’ coaches for guiding them and their parents for encouraging their children to take up the sport.
The Indian badminton team created history by winning the Thomas Cup trophy for the first time on Sunday.
In what was India’s first appearance in the final of the tournament, they won the coveted trophy after beating record 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the Thomas Cup 2022 final at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
