New and better cooperative policy will come soon: Minister Amit Shah

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said at the National Conference on Cooperative Policy in New Delhi on Tuesday that in eight-nine months, the government would be able to formulate an updated cooperative policy.

Giving details of the new policy, Shah said, “The new policy will look at free registration, transparency, coordination among cooperatives and try to bring equality through dialogue… It will explore new dimensions, reach every village.” , will create credit society, will double the farmers. Shah said that July 6, 2021 was an important day for India’s cooperative sector, as for the first time the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi set up the Ministry of Co-Operations, a long pending demand of people associated with this sector.

“Cooperatives have played a huge role in creating an economic model for rural development and providing employment to the poor, so that they can lead a life of dignity. Every village in developed states should have a Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS), milk cooperative market, credit society or cooperative bank. There should not be any sector where cooperatives have not reached,” said the minister.

He said doing this would ensure that “in the coming 20-25 years, the cooperative sector will reach new heights”. “Equal distribution of profits can be done only by cooperatives, where the entire profit goes to the stakeholders and the expenditure on management is minimal… For a large part of the country which is economically backward, cooperative is the only model Which can earn 80 crores. Financially rich people. To win the trust of small farmers, we have to prepare the cooperative movement for the challenges of today’s times, remove stagnation, bring change and transparency.

The Minister lauded various models like Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) and Amul, which have upheld the spirit of cooperative by adopting the path of corporate governance.

Defining the team, Shah said, “New dimensions and territories can be added only by the spirit of the team, which stands for transparency, empowerment, self-reliance and modernisation.”

There are about 8,55,000 co-operative societies of which 1,77,000 are credit societies, 700,000 are co-operative societies, 17 are national level co-operative unions and 33 are state co-operative banks. There are over 63,000 active packs with over 12 crore members. About 91 percent villages have cooperatives.
