The education ministry is aiming to convert more than 14,000 schools across the country into top grade schools, with the first batch expected to be announced by December. Sources close to the plan told ThePrint that the idea is to take this number to over 14,000 in the next two years.

Government schools will have to apply for selection under the scheme, based on their existing infrastructure, including buildings, functional toilets, ramps, ITC (Information Technology and Communication) facilities, student-teacher ratio and quality of education. The central government has already shortlisted around 2.5 lakh government schools, which will be able to apply for the PM-Shri tag.

“We want to create excellent schools for children, with a focus on the quality of education and the development of the student, not just on the development of the school. Children studying in PM-Shri schools should be able to participate in hackathons, excel in studies, science projects and everything that is expected from children of a good school,” said a senior ministry official.

Evaluation of schools based on 125 parameters under six broad parameters of ‘curriculum, pedagogy and evaluation’, ‘access and infrastructure’, ‘human resource-led’, ‘inclusive practices and gender equality’, ‘management, monitoring and Will be done. Governance’ and ‘Beneficiary Satisfaction’.

The senior official said the ministry is still working out the finer details of the evaluation parameters and will soon make it public.

Once selected, the schools will be regularly monitored by both the Central and State Governments and will have to ensure that they are adhering to the requisite standards to maintain the PM-Shri tag.
