New Zealand earthquake: Magnitude 7.1 earthquake strikes the Kermadec Islands

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands region north of New Zealand on Thursday morning, according to a USGS statement.

The earthquake was at a depth of 10 km. The agency said in a separate statement that dangerous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter.

There is no tsunami threat to Australia, the country’s Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet.
