The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday conducted searches leading to the arrest of a man allegedly involved in the “Voice of Hind” module case linked to the Islamic State.

The searches were conducted in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi and Delhi. The arrested accused has been identified as Basit Kalam Siddiqui (24), a resident of Varanasi. “The case pertains to a conspiracy by IS to radicalize influential youth in India and recruit them to commit violent jihad against the Indian state by committing acts of terroristic violence,” the agency said in a statement.

According to the NIA, Siddiqui was actively involved in radicalizing and recruiting youth for IS. The agency had earlier arrested six alleged members of the “Voice of Hind” module, including Umar Nisar – who heads IS activities in India and looks after the media as well as grassroots activities for the organisation. Subsequently, it said, a new online magazine named “Voice of Khorasan” was launched.

As alleged by the agency, Siddiqui was in touch with IS operatives based in Afghanistan and had created/published material to promote the organization through e-magazine. The accused was trying to make an explosive called “black powder” and was gaining knowledge about the use of other lethal chemical substances used to configure Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Through several “Telegram” groups, he was teaching others how to prepare explosives.
