ET5 will hit the Chinese market by September next year

Chinese EV maker Nio has announced its latest electric car, the ET5, which promises an astonishing 1,000km range. While the range is impressive on paper, it is rated against the Chinese CLTC standard, not the US-based EPA standard used on cars like the Lucid Air Dream Edition. The EV maker, which was hosting its Nio Day event in Suzhou, also announced updates for the delivery of its ET7 sedan and revealed plans for global expansion by 2025.

The starting point for the development of the ET5 is the ET7’s silhouette which integrates autonomous driving sensors into its body lines and also shares some elements of the EP9 hypercar that the company unveiled a few years back. It comes with Nio Autonomous Driving (NAD) system coupled with Aquila Super Sensing Stack and Neo Adam Supercomputing, an on-board computational platform – which will enable the car to achieve safe autonomous capability in scenarios such as highways, urban areas, parking . And even the battery swap. It said that the autonomous features will be rolled out after verification and will cost $107 per month as part of the subscription service.

The ET5 starts with a range of 550 km for the standard model but increases to 1,000 km on the ultra long range

It is not the fastest car around and is designed to rival the Tesla Model 3 somewhat, capable of accelerating from 0-100 kmph in 4.3 seconds. It will get high-performance four-piston fixed calipers specially developed by Nio that will deliver an impressive braking distance of 33.9 meters from standing stop at a speed of 100 kmph. It also has a very low drag coefficient of 0.24 which means the car is also very aerodynamic.

It gets a standard range of 550 km with 75 kWh battery and 700 km on long range 100 kWh battery. The ultra-long-range variant gets a range of 1,000 km with a 150 kWh battery. As far as the in-car technology is concerned, it gets the panoramic digital cockpit feature Pancinema which integrates augmented reality and virtual reality. It has partnered with an AR hardware manufacturer called NREAL for glasses that are designed for the ET5 that can project a 201-inch screen at six meters to drivers. It also offers a 256-color curtain of ambient light and supports Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound system.

The car starts at $51,450 before subsidies and $40,468 with battery as a service model and deliveries for the EV are expected to begin in September 2022. Nio also announced that the deliveries of its flagship ET7 sedan will begin in March 2022. It also said that its acceleration from 0-100 kmph has now been improved to 3.8 seconds and its drag coefficient has been further improved to 0.208. It was also revealed that it will enter the European market, starting with Norway and Germany. It has already started operations in Norway, but now plans to bring its EVs to Sweden and Denmark by 2020.
