Nissan Motor Co. said Thursday that it will invest $500 million to remodel its US assembly plant near Canton, Mississippi, to build two new electric vehicles, and a top executive said the automaker will build a battery factory. Looking for a US site to build.

Gupta said the proposed models will have battery-electric powertrains and new lightweight architectures designed for autonomous driving technology.

“A lot of time and money will be spent on improving the workforce,” he said.

The automaker said the investment in Mississippi is “one of many” over the next five years to expand electric vehicle production in the United States.

Gupta said Nissan’s Mexican operations should also receive new investments related to electric vehicles. “Obviously, Mexico will be part of it.”

Nissan is investing as it sees the market getting ready for electric vehicles, he said. “We’re not going for a big bang.”
