NMC approves admission of 100 students to Assam’s 12th Medical College: Chief Minister

As per NMC norms, the college has to provide all the basic facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, equipment, building and hospital facilities to get the approval.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved a new medical college in Assam with 100 MBBS seats. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tweeted that the apex regulatory body of medical education in India has given its nod for the Nalbari Medical College, which has become the 12th medical college in the state to get the NCM approval.

“Nalbari Medical College is recognized by the National Medical Commission with approval to admit 100 MBBS students. It is a historic achievement for Assam that 4 new medical colleges are being established in just one year,” tweeted CM Sarma. The new medical college will start admission to MBBS course from the academic session 2023-24.

Nalbari Medical College was accredited by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC on February 27 this year after inspecting the analyst’s report to evaluate the infrastructure and availability of the college, libraries, hostels, hospital, laboratories . Faculty, their experience, publications and residents or tutors, nursing and paramedical staff for starting MBBS course.

Read the NMC notification, “In view of the above sanction of 100 MBBS seats, the commission has decided to obtain undertaking or necessary documents for issuing permission letter to start or increase the seats for the academic year 2023-24. “

As per the norms of the commission, the college has to provide all the basic facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, equipment, building and hospital facilities to get the approval. Further, no student should be admitted to the above courses till the formal permission of MARB is completed, the notice added.

Meanwhile, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta informed that after the fresh approval, the total number of MBBS seats in the state will now increase to 1,500. In addition, the Assam government has also set a target to increase the number of medical colleges in the state to 24 by the year 2026, informed the health minister. In February, the commission had approved 100 MBBS seats in the Nagaon Medical College in Assam.
