  • Frontline workers and those above 60 with co-morbidities will get a ‘precautionary dose’.
  • The Health Ministry has said that no medical certificate is required for people above 60 for vaccination.
  • On December 25, PM Modi had announced the third dose along with the vaccination of children.

The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said that people above 60 years of age with co-morbidities will not be required to submit a certificate from their doctors for ‘precautionary dosage’. “Such people are expected to consult their doctor before deciding to take the precautionary dose,” the Union Health Ministry said.

Apart from this, the ministry also gave instructions to vaccinate children of 15 to 18 years. It said that appointments for precautionary doses can be booked online or onsite (walk-in). Services will be available in on-site mode subject to availability of vaccination slots.

Earlier on Monday, the Health Ministry had said that there would be a gap of 9 months between the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and the precautionary dose.

The specifics of the gaps for the vaccines currently being used in India’s immunization program – Covashield and Covaxin – are being worked out, and a final decision on this will be taken soon, it said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an address to the nation on Saturday night announced that vaccination against COVID-19 for 15-18-year-olds will begin on January 3, while administering a “precautionary dose” for health care and frontline workers. Will go 10 January.

The decisions come amid rising cases of Kovid linked to the Omicron version of the virus.
