No need for COVID booster dose as of now, third wave unlikely: AIIMS Director

AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria said that India does not yet need a booster dose of the Kovid-19 vaccine. He also said that the likelihood of a “huge third wave” is “decreasing with every passing day”.

Dr. Randeep Guleria said at the book release event, “There is no increase in COVID-19 cases so far. Hence, there is no need for booster doses in India as of now.”

Dr Guleria was speaking at the release of “Going Viral”, a book on the formulation of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin by Dr Balram Bhargava, Director General, ICMR.

The Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi also appreciated the ongoing COVID-19 vaccination drive in the country.

Guleria said that the way vaccines are being administered, the chances of any major wave with large penetration are decreasing with every passing day.

“It is unlikely that the third wave of COVID-19 will hit India as compared to the first and second. Over time the pandemic will take an endemic form. We will continue to get cases but the severity will be greatly reduced,” she said .

Meanwhile, the cumulative COVID-19 Vaccine Dosage The Union Health Ministry said that administered in the country crossed 118 crores on Tuesday.

Over 68 lakh vaccine doses have been administered till 7 pm on Tuesday, it said, adding that the tally is expected to increase with the compilation of the final report for the day by late night.

The nationwide vaccination campaign was launched on 16 January.
