‘No one can stop me’: Over 70, taken away by police, meet Tripura’s most determined voter

Kalai, a voter from Nagar Bordovali constituency, could not stand in line due to his age and health and was taken inside the polling station by police personnel.

Rajni Kalai, 72, has had two strokes and can hardly walk. Despite his family’s reluctance to bring him, he was adamant on exercising his franchise in the Tripura Assembly elections on Thursday, 16 February.

Kalai, a voter of Kasba Bordovali constituency, could not stand in line due to his age and health and was taken inside the polling station by police personnel.

Voters queuing up at Bordovali High School in the afternoon were surprised to see an elderly man turn up to cast his vote. With extreme pain, he stepped inside and was then assisted by personnel.

A relative said that Kalai was an ex-policeman, and hence he was adamant on casting his vote.

When News18 Tried to talk to her, a vulnerable Rajni said, “I was a policeman, this is democracy…we have to vote, we need to elect our government. I am not well, but I am very excited to cast my vote and nothing can stop me.”

His wife who came along told News18, “Every year, come what may, he will cast his vote. He asks everyone to vote and no one can stop him in this.

Many other voters standing in line were in awe. Meenu Rai, one of the voters told News18“Sometimes, people do not want to cast their vote…It is nothing but laziness, [so] We are all excited to see him.”

Political temperatures are running high in Tripura as the opposition has leveled serious allegations against the incumbent government, which in turn has rejected them. In the midst of it all, one man’s determination to exercise his right to vote sets an inspiring example for citizens of all generations.
