No transfer expectations for Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte, focused on solving problems

LONDON: Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte says he has no hope of whether the club will strengthen the squad in January, but admits they have many problems to solve.

Following last week’s 2-0 defeat by Chelsea in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals, Conte spoke of the ‘significant gap’ that had opened up between his former club and Tottenham.

On the eve of the comeback phase, Conte said that the transfer policy was down to the club and that he was only focused on trying to get the best out of the current players.

Conte, the former Chelsea coach who took over the reins of Tottenham in November, told reporters: “I have no hopes, I am a coach. I know we have to solve many problems.

“The best possible way for me at the moment is to try to get the best out of my players and improve the team. That’s the only way I can try to rectify the situation.

“The club knows the situation and has to make the best decision.”

Conte said he had a “good meeting” with club president Daniel Levy and football’s managing director Fabio Paratici about the way forward.

“I arrived in the middle of the season and I’m sure they know the situation better than I do,” said the Italian.

“It was a good meeting to speak about the two months I spent at Tottenham and to share my thoughts with him.”

One player that Conte has struggled to best is record signing Tanguy Nombele, who was booed by fans when he was substituted against Morecambe in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Asked his thoughts about Nombele’s situation, Conte said: “If I have to tell him something or make him do something, I’ll do it in a private way. Not in front of the media.”

Tottenham are undefeated in eight Premier League games since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo but were knocked out by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week.

While Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel on Tuesday dismissed suggestions his side had a leg up in the final, Conte knows Tottenham are a huge task.

Conte said, “We are facing a top team that won the Champions League and invested a lot of money to improve the team over the summer. But despite our problems, we have to give everything tomorrow and show great desire and You have to fight to play against it.” Team up like this and show we can improve.”

Tuchel said his side was ready for a fight to reach the Wembley final. “I would say we have no foot in the final. Why waste energy thinking about half a foot or not a foot?” said the German. “We always prepare properly on the front foot and have a lot of respect for the competition and our opponents.

“We were very good in the first game but we have to make room again.”
