norovirus

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause gastrointestinal disease. It causes inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines, as well as severe vomiting and diarrhea.

The virus does not significantly affect healthy people, but it can be serious in young children, the elderly, and people with other concomitant diseases. It can also spread through direct contact with infected persons.

Norovirus is spread through the stool and vomit of an infected person. Therefore, it is necessary to take precautions as this disease spreads very fast.

However, the virus can spread for up to two days after the onset of the disease.

Symptoms

Symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, fever, headache and body aches. Acute vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration and further complications.

State Health Minister today issued guidelines for prevention of spread of Norovirus. According to the guidelines, the infected person should take rest at home and drink ORS solution and boiled water.

People should take proper care of their immediate environmental hygiene and personal hygiene. “Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating and after using the toilet. Special attention should be paid to those interacting with animals,” the guidelines said.

It said, “Chlorinate drinking water sources, wells and storage tanks with bleaching powder. Use chlorinated water for domestic use. Use only boiled water for drinking.”

Fruits and vegetables should be used only after washing them thoroughly. The guidelines state that sea fish and shellfish such as crabs and mussels should be consumed only after they are thoroughly cooked.
