North-Eastern states on alert as cyclonic storm “Sitang” approaches

The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Sitang’.

New Delhi:

The Indian Meteorological Department, or IMD, today said that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm “Sitang”.

The IMD said that the cyclone named Sitarang by Thailand will reach the West Bengal-Bangladesh coast on Tuesday.

The Met Office said that there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in the north-east region with wind speed reaching 60 kmph on Monday.

The IMD said that Tripura will be the most affected with the possibility of maximum rainfall of 200 mm in 24 hours.

A “red alert” has been issued for Tripura, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland. An “Orange Alert” has been issued for Arunachal Pradesh and West Bengal.

The Tripura government has ordered the closure of all educational institutions till October 26.

The National Disaster Response Force, or NDRF, is likely to be hit by the cyclonic storm in the north-eastern states, officials said.

The state governments have asked the NDRF authority to deploy additional forces in areas where heavy to very heavy rains are likely.

three southern Assam districts – Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi; All 11 districts of Mizoram, all eight districts of Tripura and most of the 16 districts of Nagaland are on “red alert”.

The Tripura government has canceled the leave of all the officers for the next one week.

The Tripura government has taken some steps including regulation of vehicular movement across the state on October 25 and 26, opening of adequate number of relief materials with sufficient quantity of relief material etc.
