As EVs are gaining momentum, battery cells are becoming problematic. First, having enough battery running out while range is still a challenge. But perhaps the biggest issue comes against the green credentials of many of these batteries because mining batteries is problematic. Now Northvolt has revealed that it has produced the first battery cell with a cathode constructed from 100 percent recycled nickel, manganese and cobalt.

Northvolt is a battery startup started by two former Tesla executives who previously worked with Panasonic at the Gigafactory in Nevada. Between the Swedish startup that is backed by Volkswagen and a massive battery facility in Sweden. Volkswagen’s investment comes with the option of forming a 50-50 joint venture to build another battery factory to supply it.

Volkswagen has placed a massive $14 billion order for Northvolt, and the development comes as part of a massive investment.

“Uniquely, all recycling and production processes were completed on a single site, at Northvolt Labs in Vsters, Sweden. The development stands as a success for the battery industry and for Northvolt to support in its mission. A milestone in establishing a sustainable supply of batteries is the decarbonization of society,” revealed Northvolt.

Northvolt plans to ramp up its recycling effort. It wants to make 50 percent of its batteries like this by 2030.

“With construction beginning in Q1 2022 and operation in 2023, the recycling plant will receive incoming materials for recycling from two sources: end-of-life batteries from electric vehicles and production scrap from Northvolt ETT,” Northvolt said.

Northvolt plans to recycle 125,000 tons of batteries per year and expects to leverage this to activate 30 GWh of new battery cells each year.
