Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen retained his world chess title on Friday as he registered a fourth win over Russian challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi. Carlsen won his two-million-euro ($2.3 million) match in Dubai by winning the 11th game of the 14-game series.

Nepomniachtchi resigned with a brief handshake and the two players exchanged a few words.

The 31-year-old has now won five consecutive world titles, winning the first in 2013.

The competition in Dubai began with five draws, before the Norwegian won the longest game played at the World Championships in nearly eight hours to unlock the competition and put themselves on a winning path.
