Rajkot: A notorious gangster with 86 offenses registered against him; His 18-year-old son was killed in an encounter with the police in Gediya village of Patti taluka of Surendranagar district on Saturday night.
The deceased have been identified as Hanif Khan Jat Malek alias Kalo alias Munno (44) and his son Madin Hanif Khan Jat Malek (18).
“Both (Hanif and Madin) were killed in an encounter when a team led by police sub-inspector VM Jadeja went to Gediya village to arrest Hanif, who was a criminal under the GUJCTOC (Gujarat Terrorism and Organized Crime Control) Act. In many cases including. ”, Deputy Superintendent of Police HP Joshi told TOI.
“Hanif fired three shots at the police team, which had come to nab him, while his son Madin attacked them with dharia (Bill Hook). Two policemen were injured in the Bill Hook attack. In retaliation, the police fired three rounds in which Hanif and Madin were killed.
The bodies of the father and son have been sent to the Surendranagar Civil Hospital for forensic panel postmortem, he said.
According to Joshi, Hanif was also one of the three absconding criminals of Surendranagar wanted in the GujCTOC case.
Police said Hanif was a member of the infamous gang, known as the Gedia gang, which targeted trucks on the highway. This gang used to rob goods from moving trucks at night or by assaulting the driver on the highway.
Hanif has 86 cases registered against him, out of which he was arrested in 59 cases. In other cases, he is said to be absconding. Crimes against Hanif range from murder, attempt to murder, assault on police, theft, assault to name a few. Surendranagar SP HP Joshi said Hanif was a member of the Gedia gang, whose members have more than 125 cases registered against them in at least seven districts.
“Hanif’s wife Bilkis, his brother Rashid Khan, brother-in-law Wasim Khan and cousin Azrat Khan are all in jail for offenses registered under the GJCTOC Act,” Joshi said.
However, the family members of Hanif allege that the police shot them intentionally. Hanif’s daughter Simran also alleged that her brother Madin, who was killed in the encounter, was a minor and was 16 years old. “We do not accept dead bodies until we get justice. PSI Jadeja had threatened to kill my father earlier also. The police team had come to encounter them on Saturday night,” alleged Rinku, niece of Simran and Hanif.
