‘November domestic retail sales up 9% over pre-pandemic levels’

Retail sales in India grew 9% in November from pre-pandemic levels in the same month in 2019, a sign of recovery in business, amid concerns about the spread of the Omicron version and a possible third wave of the pandemic, according to the Association of Retailers India (RAI).

In its retail trade survey, RAI said last month’s growth was 16% compared to the same period last year. Stating that retail businesses across regions had indicated an increase in sales compared to pre-pandemic levels, RAI said West India indicated a growth of 11%, followed by East and South at 9% while North India indicated a growth of 6% as compared to the level of sales. “Business is improving and we expect it to continue,” said RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan. “However, there are still concerns around Omicron and the third wave, creating a sense of cautious optimism,” he said.

Consumer durables and electronics, which did not show significant growth in October, grew 32% in November at pre-pandemic levels, driven by strong Diwali sales.

It added that sporting goods registered a growth of 18% and apparels indicated a steady growth of 6%.

RAI said food and groceries, and quick service restaurants continued to show signs of growth, while other categories such as footwear, beauty, wellness and personal care, and furniture showed progress towards recovery.
