Number of stray dogs is increasing by throwing food waste: Mayor

Mayor Bina Philippe has said that the number of stray dogs increases due to careless throwing of food waste. Meat is available in abundance to dogs through food waste, which is why they are increasingly breeding, he said.

“The dogs mature rapidly and breed when food is readily available. Hence, it is of utmost importance to reduce the availability of food to control the stray dog population,” said VS Sreeshama, veterinary officer of the corporation.

The civic body has identified three feeding points where the public can deposit food for the dogs. Throwing food around for stray dogs is prohibited.

As far as meat stalls are concerned, the corporation has already made arrangements for disposal of waste. In the meantime, deliberate feeding of slaughterhouse waste to stray dogs should be avoided, the mayor said.

Deputy Mayor Musafir Ahmed said the massive food wastage during the pandemic due to home delivery of food had a role in the recent multiplication of the stray dog population in the state.
