Number of students doing MBA increased, more women than men: Survey

In 2021, the volume of applications for management programs grew 0.4 percent compared to a year earlier, claims the annual 2021 Application Trends Survey. The main reason behind this is the pandemic. It was also revealed that out of the total growth seen globally, the application of MBA programs from India saw a major increase.

The survey claimed that candidates were looking for alternative career options during COVID and that business schools introduced more flexible admission policies, resulting in increased application volume last year. A survey of nearly a thousand MBA and business master programs found that favorable visa policies, two-year work visas, the lifting of lockdown restrictions as well as the changed perception of the US under Biden are the main reasons for this boom.

This year’s application data also indicated that globally, women candidates emerging from the shadow of the pandemic refocused on their career ambitions, with three out of five (60 percent) full-time two-year MBA programs reported an increase in applications as compared to female candidates. Two out of five (43 percent) programs report an increase from male candidates. In comparison, a much smaller proportion of online MBA programs (42 percent) reported an increase in applications from female candidates, reflecting a preference for women to return to in-person, full-time education.

Applicants whose citizenship is different from the citizenship of the country where the program is located showed an increase of 4.1 percent compared to a decline of 3.8 percent from domestic candidates, i.e. applicants who are citizens of the country where a program is located. More programs in Europe, the US and the UK saw a drop in applications from domestic candidates than in all regions.

The share of full-time two-year MBA programs showing an increase in applications from international candidates has increased from 28 percent in 2019 to 57 percent in 2021. In addition, many American programs have twice the place in the top 50 according to US News. And World Report saw an increase in applications from international candidates (73 percent) as from domestic candidates (36 percent).

The full-time MBA program continued to gain traction in 2021. One-year (52 percent) and two-year (56 percent) MBA programs report an increase in applications in 2021, an average of 41 percent above all programs. In contrast, professional MBA programs such as the part-time MBA, executive MBA, and online MBA programs – tailored to the needs of working professionals – saw their share of application growth reporting at the lowest level since 2017.
