Provisions will be made for direct election of mayors of municipal corporations and chairpersons of municipalities and notified area councils (NACs) in the urban local body (ULB) elections in Odisha on March 24, said an SEC notification. For the first time in ULB elections, the option of NOTA (None of the above) will also be available.

Amid the ongoing counting of votes in the Odisha Panchayat elections, the State Election Commission on February 28 issued notification for holding elections for 106 urban local bodies and three municipal corporations on March 24. Counting of votes will take place on March 26. The notification said that after the amendment of the provision under the law, for the first time, the election of mayors in municipal corporations and chairpersons of municipalities and NAC will be direct.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used in ULB elections. Each booth will have two EVMs – one for electing the Mayor/Chairman and the other for the Corporator/Counselor.

While candidates can file nominations from March 2 to March 7, the scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on March 9. Nominations can be withdrawn till March 14.
