Offshore IITs: Know about Indian Institutes to be set up abroad

New Delhi : Offshore Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) – India’s premier institutes are ready to conduct beyond the Indian peninsula following the recommendation of the National Policy on Education (NEP). These offshore campuses will be mentored by Indian institutions of higher learning.

According to news agency PTI, the institutes are likely to be called “India International Institute of Technology”. The report further states that faculty from the Indian counterpart may be transferred to branches established abroad.

Name of offshore IIT

According to news agency PTI, the name of Offshore IITss will be ‘Indian Institute of International Technology’. He further clarified that the ‘international’ bit will be added to the name to avoid confusion.

“The difference in name with substantial similarity will allow the newly established IITs to develop their own identity and ethos while depicting the strengths of the existing IITs. The offshore campus should be a separate legal entity guided by an Indian institution with its own identity.” and ethos,” people familiar with the matter informed PTI,

Location for offshore IITs

According to several reports, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and Saudi Arabia have shown great interest in hosting offshore IIT campuses. While IIT Delhi is reportedly considering setting up a Campus in UAE, IIT Madras Exploring options in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Tanzania.

Offshore IIT. committee to decide on

Earlier a 17-member committee was constituted, led by IIT Council Permanent Chairman K Radhakrishnan, to discuss the way forward for offshore IIT campuses. The committee included JNU Vice Chancellor Shantisree Dhulipudi Pandit, Indian Institute of Science Director Govindan Rangarajan as well as directors of various IITs in India.

Structure of Offshore IITs

The committee has reportedly recommended that the structure of offshore IITs be built on IIT, National Institute of Technology (NIT) or Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER). This means that a range of institutions can be set up as the current IIT Act does not provide for setting up IITs outside the country.

The committee further suggested four models of the institute-

Offshore campus of a specific IIT, (Model A)

A new campus (Model B) set up together by a group of IITs and higher education institutions

Collaboration between one or more IITs with a reputed host university abroad

-An entirely different range of institutions catering exclusively to such complexes abroad (Model D)

The medium of instruction in all offshore campuses shall be English as recommended by the Committee. Further, he has said that the campuses abroad will follow the semester system and the start and end dates of the semester may be as per the academic calendar.

The institutes will offer an undergraduate degree (B.Tech), a masters degree (M.Tech) and research-based Ph.D. to their students.

The committee also recommended programs like specialization

-Computer Science and Information Technology

-data science

-artificial intelligence

-machine learning

-robotics

-Electronics

Mining or petroleum and energy

Students strength in offshore IITs

“The number of students in a given program should be such that the course is economically viable. However, the exact number can be left up to the institution. However these institutions must cater to the local student population who may be Indian expatriates But the panel has recommended that the percentage of Indian students in these institutions should be less than 20 per cent.

Overall he recommended the committee ’30 to 40 students per year for each B.Tech programme, 15 to 20 students for postgraduate programmes, and a “few students” for PhD programme’.
