An 87-year-old woman lying on her bed was raped and thrashed by an unidentified man at her residence in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The victim’s family said that the police officers tried to persuade them not to report the rape and file a theft complaint.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Western Range) Chinmoy Biswal, who is also the PRO of Delhi Police, denied the allegations leveled by the family and said the teams were focusing on speedy investigation of the case and arresting the accused.

Victim’s grandson told Hindu That the old lady, who lives with her 65-year-old daughter, was alone at home around 12.30 pm when the incident took place. “My mother-in-law had gone for a walk in the locality and had locked the door from outside as Dadi cannot walk and is confined to bed. After about five minutes a person entered the house and said that he had come to check the gas connection. Dadi gave him the phone and asked to call the daughter but she switched off the phone,” said the son-in-law.

According to the family, the accused stayed in the house for an hour and raped the 87-year-old. “Nani (Grandmother) Said that the man was about 30 years old and was intoxicated. She kept shouting in Punjabi that she was old and lying on the bed, but the man raped and thrashed her,” he said, adding that the man left the house around 1.30 pm and took grandmother’s old phone with him. Leaving everything else, the house untouched.

When the victim’s daughter returned at around 1.45 pm, she found the old woman in an injured condition – her mouth bleeding profusely and her clothes badly torn. The son-in-law said he told the daughter about the rape, who then informed a neighbor and later called the police.

“When the police reached the house, my mother-in-law and grandmother told them what happened. Police officials, including a senior officer, tried to persuade him to file a rape complaint and told him that he would have to attend the court proceedings and move around a lot to take the case forward. He also told them that there could be a lot of ‘harassment’ in a rape case and that ‘ Respect’ (respect) of a woman. My mother-in-law got scared and only filed a phone theft report,” he said.

On Monday morning, a relative living in Pune reached Delhi and, along with others, convinced the 80-year-old and his daughter to report the matter. “The police were still not taking us seriously and trying to stop us. We had to take to social media to expose the matter, following which a senior police officer listened to us,” said the son-in-law.

Mr Biswal said there was no negligence or persuasion by the police officials on Sunday and the family had made a handwritten complaint of mobile phone theft. “On Monday, he shared more details of the rape of the senior woman, following which substantial sections of the Indian Penal Code were added,” he said, adding that the victim’s medical examination was conducted initially at home and later at the hospital. Was.

He further said that a special investigation team has been constituted to probe the matter.

Sources said that the complainant in the case is the victim’s second daughter who lives nearby and an FIR has been registered under IPC sections 380 (theft), 323 (causing hurt) and 376 (punishment for rape).

The victim’s family said that the old man is in pain and is unable to stop crying after the incident. “In November last year, she was hospitalized thrice due to age-related complications and we thought she would not survive. She constantly complains of pain in her veins. He is in bed for seven months now,” said the son-in-law.
