Olympic swimmer who attacked Capitol pleaded guilty to felony

WASHINGTON: Five-time Olympic swimming medalist Clayte Keller pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a felony charge for attacking the US Capitol during the January 6 riots and faces 21 to 27 months in prison.

Keller admitted in court records that he tried to obstruct Congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory, fired officials who tried to remove him from the Capitol rotunda, and removed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Senate majority. Made indecent remarks about Chuck Schumer, the leader of the U.S. Near officers wearing riot gear.

He also admitted that he threw off the distinctive US Olympic team jacket during the riots and destroyed his phone and memory card containing photos and videos of him taken inside the Capitol.

Keller, 39, who grew up in Arizona and now lives in Colorado Springs, competed in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. He won two golds and one silver as a member of the 800 m freestyle relay, as well as a pair of individual bronzes in the 400 free.

He pleaded guilty to obstructing an official proceeding and agreed to cooperate with the authorities as part of his plea deal.
