Omicron tally nears 6,000 as India records 2.6 lakh Covid cases in last 24 hours

Amid growing concerns over the highly transmissible new COVID-19 variant, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday said that 5,753 cases of the Omicron variant have been confirmed in the country.

Just yesterday, the country saw a one-day increase of 620 cases of omicron type, the highest ever, taking the total number of such cases to 5,488, of which 2,162 people have been cured or migrated. Maharashtra recorded the highest number of cases of Omicron type at 1,367, followed by 792 in Rajasthan, 549 in Delhi, 486 in Kerala and 479 in Karnataka.

Additionally, there were 2,64,202 fresh Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Friday.

The latest number of Covid-19 cases is around 6.7% as compared to yesterday’s figures. Meanwhile, on Thursday, the country recorded 2,47,417 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in 236 days, taking the total number of Covid-19 cases to 3,63,17,927, including 5,488 cases in the Omicron version. Active cases have risen to 11,17,531, the highest in 216 days, while the death toll has risen to 4,85,035 with 380 fresh deaths, data updated at 8 am.

Active cases comprise 3.08 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has come down to 95.59 per cent, the ministry said. A total of 2,57,299 coronavirus infections were recorded in a single day on May 21. The active COVID-19 caseload has registered an increase of 1,62,212 cases in the 24-hour period.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed 20 lakh on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It had crossed 60 lakh on 28 September, 70 lakh on 11 October. 80 lakh on 29 October, 90 lakh on 20 November and crossed the one crore mark on 19 December.
