On camera, 21-year-old Ivory Coast footballer dies after collapsing on the pitch

The cause of Sri Sayala’s death is not known.

In a shocking incident, an Ivory Coast footballer died on Sunday after collapsing on the field during a game. Mustapha Sayla, 21, was playing for Racing Club Abidjan during a domestic league game against Soul FC (football club) when the incident happened.

A video going viral on social media captured the incident. It appeared that Mr. Sayla was staggering before losing balance and falling to the ground on his back. The caption of the Twitter post read, “21-year-old Mustafa Sayla died suddenly while playing football in the middle of a match. The cause of death is cardiac arrest.”

According to CNNDuring the game at the Robert Champroux Stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Mr Sayla fell on the pitch away from the ball. Seeing him fall to the ground, the opposition players immediately sought medical help. After this Mr. Sayla was taken to the hospital. However, he was declared dead on the way to the hospital.

The RC of Abidjan confirmed Mr Sayla’s death on Twitter. “Our defender Sayla Mustafa passed away following an illness on the pitch this evening. The management extends its deepest condolences to his family. May Mustafa rest in peace. Rest in peace Lions.” Football Club wrote in French.

Separately, the team announced on its website that Mr Sayla’s funeral would be held on Monday at the municipal cemetery in Dubou, Ivory Coast. The cause of Sri Sayala’s death is not known.

Meanwhile, according to espnReacting to the footballer’s death, former Ivory Coast and Chelsea player Didier Drogba called for more to be done to protect players from such unfortunate incidents. Notably, Drogba’s former international teammate Chik Tiote died following a cardiac arrest during a training session in 2017.
