Madrid:

A church official was killed and a priest was seriously injured late Wednesday in a knife attack at two churches in southern Spain.

Prosecutors immediately opened a terrorism investigation into the attack in the southern port city of Algeciras in Spain’s Andalusia region.

“Just after 7:00 pm (1800 GMT) today, a man entered the Church of San Isidro in Algeciras, where armed with a knife he attacked the priest, killing him,” said a statement from the interior ministry. Seriously injured.”

“Next, he entered the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma, in which, after causing damage, he attacked Verger. Verger managed to exit the church, but outside the assailant grabbed him and he suffered mortal injuries. “

“Moments later, (the attacker) was disarmed and arrested and is currently in police custody.”

A police source told AFP that the attacker was wearing a long cloak and “shouted something” during the attack.

Eyewitnesses at Nuestra Señora de la Palma told local media that a man entered the building around 7:30 p.m., when they were finishing the Eucharist service. They said that he was screaming and began to throw icons, crosses and candles on the floor.

Sources in the public prosecutor’s office said without giving further details that prosecutors moved quickly to launch a terrorism investigation, which is being led by a judge from the Audiencia Nacional, Spain’s top criminal court.
