One killed in fire in Pune industrial area

One person was killed and at least one other injured when a fire broke out at a small cake sparkler manufacturing unit at an industrial estate in Pune district on the morning of September 16.

The fire that broke out at Bhau Industrial Estate in Sinhagad Road area was brought under control after more than an hour of effort, officials said.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fire chief Prashant Ranpise said the unit produced firecrackers used in small celebrations like birthday parties.

The industrial unit burnt down after a loud explosion, followed by several explosions after 10 a.m.

According to the police, 16 laborers were working in the unit and except one, all managed to escape.

Although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, officials said the deceased worker was mixing chemicals in cake candles when a bulb lit over the mixture could generate heat, resulting in the first major explosion.

Officials say other explosions are believed to have been caused by chemical material around the unit.

The fire department said that it sent eight fire tenders to the spot.
