The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF, Russia’s Sovereign Wealth Fund) today announced the Russian single-ingredient Sputnik Lite vaccine coronavirus It has been approved by the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) as a universal booster shot for all vaccines against the coronavirus used in the country. The booster dose is available to all residents aged 18+ and can be applied six months after the second dose of any other vaccine administered in the UAE.

The Sputnik Lite vaccine is based on human adenovirus serotype 26 which is the first component of the Sputnik V vaccine. A one-shot vaccine was authorized in the UAE in October 2021. Two-dose Sputnik V was also authorized by UAE regulatory authorities in January 2021. Both Sputnik Lite and Sputnik V vaccines are approved by MoHAP under an emergency use authorization process.

One-shot Sputnik Lite is a highly effective vaccine when used on a standalone basis and applied as a booster. The latest findings from the Gamleya Center, based on data from 28,000 subjects in Moscow, showed that the Sputnik Lite vaccine administered standalone during the first three months after vaccination has a 70% efficacy against infection with the delta version of the coronavirus. The vaccine is 75% effective in subjects under 60 years of age. For other vaccines the effectiveness of one shot Sputnik Lite as a booster against the delta variant would be close to efficacy against the delta version of the Sputnik V vaccine: over 83% against infection and over 94% against hospitalization.

One-shot vaccination of Sputnik Lite has several key benefits, including ease of administering the vaccine, monitoring, and a more flexible re-vaccination schedule when used as a booster. Sputnik Lite has demonstrated a better efficacy than some two-shot vaccines, which have shown a less than 50% reduction in efficacy against the delta variant five months after injection. Standalone use of Sputnik Lite also provides very high efficacy against serious illness and hospitalization.

Sputnik Lite has been shown to be safe and highly effective by real-world vaccination data. Specifically, the vaccine has demonstrated efficacy between 78.6–83.7% among the elderly, as confirmed by the Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Paraguay’s Ministry of Health also found Sputnik Lite to be 93.5% effective during the country’s ongoing vaccination campaign.
