Online education craze started in Delhi, first of its kind virtual school

New Delhi: Buoyed by the success of the edtech platform, the Delhi government has now joined the race to lure students into virtual classrooms.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday launched this ‘Delhi Model Virtual School’ – which is said to be the “first of its kind”. The virtual institution will function out of a real brick-and-mortar school – Shaheed Hemu Kalani Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Lajpat Nagar.

As per the claims made by the Delhi government, this is the first time that a public school will provide an opportunity to children to get quality education through online medium with accessible fee, the Delhi government said.

However, the National Institute of Open Studies (NIOS) in a press statement issued on Wednesday evening refuted the claim of the state government and said, “The Virtual Open School of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was started by the Ministry of Education on 14 August 2021. It is based on the approach of blended learning and since the launch of the Virtual Open School, 2,11,394 students have been certified so far.

The school is affiliated to the newly-launched Delhi Board of School Education and students from across the country will be eligible for admission. It also has collaborations with international level boards for its course content.

To begin with, the school will admit 200 students and later will scale.

Officials said that the Aam Aadmi Party government has been working on the school for almost a year. Kejriwal inaugurating the school Told“Taking lessons from virtual classes conducted during the pandemic, we are launching a virtual school to bring neglected children into mainstream education.”

“The aim of the school is to help girl students who are deprived of education, drop out children or girl students who cannot physically go to school,” he said.

The virtual school was announced by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in his budget speech in March 2021. He had said it would be for those who want to “benefit from the Delhi model of education”.

Presently admissions are being accepted for classes IX to XII.

According to a circular issued by the Directorate of Education, the admission process for class 9 will consist of three stages – one, filling the online application form; Two, document verification; and three, online examination with counselling.

Students in the age group of 13 to 15 years having a completion certificate of class VIII from any school in the country can apply.

Kejriwal said, “These schools will not only provide traditional education in online format but will also provide skill-based education to students who want to pursue their profession together. This school will also provide preparatory classes for competitive exams like CUET, NEET, JEE etc.

The platform will not only offer online sessions, but students can also ask questions and answer them through special sessions. There will also be guest lectures by professionals and sessions on skill building.

The school’s website says that education will be delivered through qualified teachers and even regional languages.

Teachers in the school will participate in the Online Teaching Method (OTM), focusing on teaching strategies for building community, facilitating meaningful discussion and providing practical feedback online.

According to the website, the entry fee for the four-hour morning session and afternoon session is Rs 1,000. school is still release Its fee structure.

The platform developed by Google and Schoolnet India will issue registration IDs to students which they can use to access online classes, digital library and recorded lectures.
