“Only 50 lakh Indians…”: This is what Zerodha CEO has to say about gyms

Mr. Kamath talks about the importance of strength training

Nitin Kamath, Founder, Zerodha has always been an advocate of a healthy lifestyle. The 43-year-old recently took to his Twitter to talk about the importance of strength training for anyone over the age of 40.

He shared a detailed graph by World of Statistics which shows that the adoption of gym membership in India is as low as 50 lakh (or 0.3 per cent).

In a tweet, he wrote, “Strength training is integral to increasing HealthSpan, and we need to focus more on it. There is enough research to prove that exercise delays death and cognitive decline more than any other intervention.” and resists physical degradation better.”

He further wrote that most Indians think that as they grow older, they do not need strength training. “The truth is that strength training becomes even more important as we get older, especially after our 40s. The stronger we get, the more active we get as we get older.”

She also emphasized that strength training is even more important for women. “Inactivity and poor nutrition can reduce bone mass at a rate of 1% per year after age 40 in men and women. Women are more prone to bone density loss than men, so strength Training is important.”

Responding to Mr Kamath’s post, Twitter users expressed concern about the affordability of gym memberships. One user wrote, “The monthly salary of an average Indian is $354 while a good gym membership in India costs between $50 to $100. How is this possible?”

Another user argued, “The gym isn’t the only way to strength-train though… There’s a correlation here but not causation.”

A third user wrote, “Because there is no point in explaining. Uncle will walk out saying” Actually, if you wake up early, you don’t need any gym shame. Inspiration cannot be gifted. It only comes from within. Let that 0.3% be the 0.3% in every aspect of life.”

“Bang on, Nitin. I’m sure you know this, but this chart is a bit misleading. About 70 percent of India lives in rural areas – no gyms, but their lifestyle also requires hard work. We Talking about an effective 3- 4% subscription rate,” commented a fourth user.
