Ahead of Oppo’s Inno Day 2021 event, the smartphone giant has showcased an interesting technology for mobile cameras. Oppo teased the retractable lens technology for the smartphone on Twitter without revealing more details. Adding more zoom capabilities on smartphones has always been a flagship product for all the major brands. However, adding more optical zoom functionality means that smartphones will automatically become bulky. And this is where the problem begins as no one would want to have a smartphone that is as thick as the camera.

In order to offer more optical zoom effectively, the distance between the lens and the sensor needs to be increased and this is what Oppo has demonstrated. While we are all familiar with pop-up cameras, Oppo has introduced a similar concept. But instead of the lens popping upward, the technology allows the lens to extend outward horizontally. This is similar to what we see in Digicam.
The new camera module is claimed to be water-resistant. As for durability, it goes without saying that Oppo will include software features that will retract the lens when the device detects any sudden movement, especially when the phone falls. This will protect the lens from damage.

This is one of the new technologies that OPPO is focusing on and more details will be available during the two-day OPPO Inno Day 2021 event starting December 12.
Oppo showcased the innovation by posting a short video on Twitter, saying, “Most pop-ups are annoying… but our self-developed retractable camera is not.”
The video shows how the technology works and the camera lens was sprayed with water to reveal that it is waterproof. As for the camera module, the device is likely to come with a 1/1.56-inch sensor with a 50mm focal length lens and an aperture of F2.4.
Oppo has not revealed the name of the upcoming smartphone with this camera technology and there is no information about a possible launch date.
