Opposition CPI(M) MLA walks out of Tripura assembly, boycotts Governor’s speech

He said that the law and order situation in the state has improved significantly and it is under control which is evident from the fact that the percentage of serious crimes has come down by 26 per cent as compared to 2019.

Governor Satyadev N Arya on Thursday expressed satisfaction over the prevailing law and order situation in Tripura, while opposition CPI(M) legislators boycotted his speech and staged a walkout after failing to attract his attention on the first day of the budget session. There was talk of deteriorating law and order. The governor in his speech highlighted a significant reform in law and order under the BJP-led state government, citing a decrease in the percentage of serious crimes, and an increase in the conviction rate, apart from violence against women. The law and order situation in the state has improved significantly and it is well under control which is evident from the fact that the percentage of serious crimes has come down by 26 per cent as compared to 2019,” he said. Crime against women has come down by 19.60. percentage in 2020 as compared to 2019, the governor informed. The conviction rate under non-IPC is 52 per cent in 2020 as compared to 36.30 per cent in 2019 and 32.40 per cent in 2020, while it is 23.10 per cent in 2019 under IPC. ,” he told.

The Governor also lauded the achievements of the Biplab Kumar Deb government in the areas of infrastructure, health care and farmers’ welfare. Earlier, when the Governor began to deliver his customary speech, Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar tried to draw his attention to the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. However, he could not say anything as the microphone was turned off.

As the government failed to attract the governor’s attention, the CPI(M) legislators led by the opposition leader staged a walkout from the house. We have a long tradition of listening to the speech of the Governor. But this time the Left Front MLAs were forced to stay away,” Sarkar later said.
