Tuticorin: Chief Minister MK Stalin, who arrived here on Thursday to review rain and flood-affected areas in the city, directed officials to immediately remove encroachments from waterways to ensure that rainwater does not stagnate in the city. Presiding over a review meeting with officials at the Thoothukudi Corporation office, he also asked the officials to prepare an integrated plan to drain the stagnant rainwater in the coastal district.
The officials made a power point presentation on the extent of damage caused by the November rains in the city and the district. The representatives of farmers’ organizations, who were waiting for the CM in the corporation, gave him a memorandum regarding the damage caused to the crop due to rain and floods in the dry district. He urged the CM to visit the fields and appealed to him to provide more compensation.
Stalin inspected Bryant Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Muthammal Colony and Rahmath Nagar, which are the worst-affected in the city and have been submerged for over a week. He promised to resolve their grievances at the earliest after holding talks with the people of the affected areas. He also started distributing relief measures worth Rs 42.6 lakh to 3,000 affected people.
Earlier in the review meeting, District Collector K Senthil Raj told the CM that 112% more rain than the normal average has been recorded in the district. Six people and 28 cattle died in the district due to rain and floods. While 532 huts and houses were partially damaged and 41 were completely damaged, a total compensation of Rs 25.04 lakh was paid.
Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru, Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran, Social Welfare Minister P Geeta Jeevan and Fisheries Minister Anita R Radhakrishnan besides Tuticorin MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and senior government officials were present during the inspection and review meetings.
On his way to Madurai by road, the CM stopped his convoy and interacted with students in Ettayapuram after seeing them dressed like revolutionary Subramaniam Bharathi.
