Organized awareness class on rights and duties for women prisoners

An awareness class on ‘Rights and Duties of Prisoners’ was organized in connection with the ‘Haq Hamara Bhi To Hai’ campaign for the inmates of the Women’s Prison and Correctional Home, Attakulangara on Monday. The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) will provide basic legal aid to persons imprisoned in prisons and child care institutions on the occasion of 75 years of independence.

The class was inaugurated by District Legal Services Authority Secretary and Deputy Judge K. Vidyadharan did it. Headed by Jail Superintendent Sophia BV S. Parvathy Menon, coordinator of the Kerala Victims Centre, led the class.

The campaign, which started on October 31, will end on November 13. As part of the campaign, DLSA representatives will conduct interviews with the inmates of district jails and collect their details. These will be shared with NALSA through State Legal Services Authority.

Free legal services to prisoners, data collection of those who have completed their sentences and are eligible for release and steps to file appeals in the case of convicts will be taken up as part of the campaign. The facilities available for the prisoners will be reviewed and further programs will be drawn up.
