Our priority is only development, not vote banks, says PM in poll-bound Karnataka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Wednesday, he asserted that the priority of the BJP government was only development, as he hit out at the ruling second party government in Karnataka and their “vote bank” politics for the backwardness of some regions of the state.

Referring to the positive aspects of having a BJP government both in the state and at the Centre, he said, “Double engine government means double profit, double welfare and double speedy development, and Karnataka is the best example.”

Assembly elections are going to be held in Karnataka by May.

“India has completed 75 years of development and now the country is moving forward with a focus on the next 25 years. These 25 years are going to be Amrit Kaal for every citizen and state, during this we have to build a developed India.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone and inaugurating various developmental projects related to irrigation, drinking water besides a National Highway Development Project at Kodekal in this district, he said, India Development can happen only when every citizen of the country, every family, every state joins this campaign.

“India can develop when everyone has a better life, be it a farmer working in the field or a laborer working in industry. India can develop when there are good crops in the fields and there is expansion of industries.

PM said that this can be possible only if we learn from the bad experiences and wrong policies of the past decades and see that it is not repeated, despite its potential in this area, the examples of Yadagiri and North Karnataka are before us in the journey of development Was lagging behind

“Earlier governments had declared many districts, including Yadgiri, backward and shirked their responsibilities. The reason for lagging behind in the development of this area is that the previous governments here did not take time to think about how to remove the backwardness from here, let alone make efforts for it (development). Road and water infrastructure, the parties in power then preferred vote bank politics, they saw every project and program through the prism of how to convert votes of a particular community into a strong vote base for them . Because of this, the people of Karnataka and the region had to face it.”

Yadgiri is part of the ‘Kalyana Karnataka’ or Hyderabad Karnataka region, as it was known earlier. These districts, which were under the erstwhile rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad, are among the backward regions of the state.

The region includes Bidar, Ballari, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir, which enjoy special status under the Constitution (Article 371J) because of their backwardness.

Making it clear that the BJP government’s priority is not vote bank, our priority is development, development and more development, Modi said the country cannot develop until even a single district lags behind in development.

He said that we have encouraged those developmental activities which were declared backward by the previous governments.

This is the second visit of the Prime Minister to election-bound Karnataka this month. He was in Hubballi on January 12 to inaugurate the National Youth Festival, during which he did a massive road show.

The visit assumes significance as the ruling BJP is gearing up for the May assembly elections in Karnataka and has set a target of winning at least 150 of the total 224 seats.

The event was attended by Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Bhagwant Khuba, several state cabinet ministers, legislators and officials.

About his government’s ambitious district programme, which includes over 100 districts considered backward, including Yadgiri, the PM said, “We have focused on good governance and started developmental works. Yadgiri has achieved 100% immunization of children, reduction in number of malnutrition, road connectivity with villages… Yadgiri’s performance has been in top 10 aspirational districts. Said, if India has to develop like border, coastal and internal security, then there is a need to eliminate the challenges of water security.

He listed irrigation projects initiated and completed by the government including river link projects. “Emphasis is being laid on more crop per drop and micro-irrigation. Working on increasing the ground water level.

About Jal Jeevan Mission, he said that when we came to power, 3 crore households had tap water connectivity, now it has reached around 11 crore rural households. “So we have taken it to about 8 crore rural households.” Citing a study, he said that due to Jal Jeevan Mission, we will be able to save the lives of 1.25 lakh children every year.

He also appreciated the Basavaraj Bommai government for the rapid development of North Karnataka region. PTI KSU RS ROH KSU KH KH
