One of the finest white-ball batsmen at the moment, Buttler has averaged just 19.20 in three Ashes Tests against Australia so far, including a horrific dismissal at the Boxing Day match in Melbourne.
Apart from this, he has also dropped several catches behind the stumps, including a shocker in Adelaide.
However, ahead of the New Year’s Test here from January 5, Buttler has pledged his commitment to all three formats of the game.
“It’s definitely my ambition. I don’t think I would have put as much into it as I would have,” ESPNcricinfo quoted him as saying.
“I have fantastic family support – they are very supportive of me and my career and make a lot of sacrifices for it. It’s the one thing that inspires you a lot and pushes you to try and make it worth it.” It certainly maintained my drive and ambition to try and play.
“At the moment, I think I’ve got that support, and I’m in a place where I want to try to make it work. At the moment I’m only focused in Sydney and doing good exercise.”
Asked about de Kock’s decision to pull out of Tests at the age of 29, Buttler said he was disappointed with the decision but respected South Africa’s move.
There are similarities between the two – both are wicketkeeper-batsmen, both have previously established themselves as limited-overs stars, and both are relatively young.
“It (Test retirement) is Quinton’s own personal situation, but as a fan of cricket and a huge fan of his, I am disappointed that he is at that level,” Butler, 31, said.
“I love watching him bat, keep wickets and play Test cricket. The cricketing world will miss him in that format. But I think I appreciate him for making the right decisions for him.”
Australia took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series with sweeping victories in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne, but Butler insisted England have a lot to play to avoid a 5-0 victory.
