Oval Test: Shardul Thakur, Rishabh Pant fifties set up interesting Day 5 as India set England target of 368

The fourth Test between India and England hanged in the balance after an interesting game of the day at The Oval on Sunday. After Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns fought back for England, the hosts went 71 for no loss and needed 291 runs on the final day.

Fifties from Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant helped India set a target of 368 runs for the hosts.

India were bowled out for 466 in their second innings, with Shardul scoring 60 while Pant scored 50 runs in his seventh-wicket partnership of 153 which put the visitors in the driver’s seat.

Thakur played a brilliant knock of 60 runs in the second innings before being caught by Craig Overton at first slip off Joe Root. Pant, on the other hand, got out for 50 after completing his half-century.

Earlier, India’s number eight batsman Shardul Thakur scored his second half-century of the match and Rishabh Pant scored the first half-century of the series to help India post 466, the highest score of the series.

Umesh Yadav (25) and Jasprit Bumrah (24) made cameos after a 100-run stand between Thakur and Pant as the tourists recovered after losing three wickets, including skipper Virat Kohli, in the morning session.

Chris Woakes (3-83) was again one of the English bowlers, claiming a match of seven wickets to go with his 50 in the first innings of his first Test in 12 months.
