Over 4 million Afghan children out of school, more than half are girls: UNICEF – Times of India

Kabul: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that more than 4 million children are out of school in Afghanistan, with girls being the most affected.

The United Nations also said it has extended support to educate more than 142,700 Afghan children in the past three months.

“Over the past three months, UNICEF supported 5,350 community-based education classes to ensure access to learning for more than 142,700 children across Afghanistan. Yet more needs to be done, with more than 4 million children still Out of school, more than half are girls,” UNICEF said in a tweet. As reported by TOLOnews, a Turkish NGO said that it has conducted entrance exams for students who want to be part of Afghan-Turkish schools across Afghanistan.

Out of 3500 students who sit the entrance exam, only 1000 students who manage to clear the exam will be eligible to attend Afghan-Turk schools.

“There are currently more than 1,000 native Turkish staff in Afghanistan in the administrative and educational department. We are committed to providing service to Afghanistan,” said Saleh Mohamed Sagir, head of the Mareef Foundation in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education appreciated and encouraged the facilitation of educational opportunities for children. “We wish more success to our friendly countries, especially Turkey,” Ehsanullah Khatab, the head of the Kabul education department, was quoted by Tolonnews.

Meanwhile, the number of children appearing for the exam has declined compared to previous years, teachers and examiners of Afghan-Turk schools revealed.

“The number of participants was higher in previous years,” said Omid Sapai, a teacher.

“The recent changes have had an impact on student enrollment,” said Abdul Baki Oriyakhail, a teacher.
