Padma Awards 2022: Vandana Kataria honored with Padma Shri after Tokyo Olympics show

Vandana Kataria is among nine athletes and the only hockey player this year to be nominated for the President’s Award, which will be conferred by the Hon’ble President of India. Vandana, who hails from Roshanabad in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, recently completed 250 international matches for India. She has been a part of an experienced attack line for the Indian women’s team and has been a part of many important exploits for India. She also became the first Indian female player to score a hat-trick of goals in an Olympic Games match.

She was a part of India’s historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics and has been a part of India’s gold medal victories in many other achievements including the Asian Champions Trophy in 2016, the Asia Cup in 2017, the Asian Games bronze in 2014 and silver in 2018. The double Olympian started her career playing for the Railway Sports Promotion Board and made it to the Indian junior women’s team in 2006.

The versatile forward was the country’s top scorer at the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup Women’s 2013 in Monchengladbach, Germany where India won a bronze medal. In the same year, Vandana became part of the team that won the bronze medal at the 8th Women’s Asia Cup in Malaysia.
